Coating failures almost never start in the booth. They start on the surface underneath. Blasting, cleaning, phosphatizing and precision masking are run in-house at Rowlett so the finish has something to hold on to — and so the areas that must stay bare, stay bare.

What we run

Preparation is a process, not a step

Every job that comes through the shop gets a prep route written into the traveler. Nothing goes to a booth on assumption.

Abrasive Blasting

Aluminum oxide and glass bead media, matched to the substrate and the finish. Profiles a surface for mechanical adhesion, strips old coatings and removes mill scale, weld discoloration and oxide.

Cleaning & Degreasing

Alkaline cleaning and solvent degreasing pull cutting oils, drawing compounds, fingerprints and shop soils. A water break-free surface is the pass/fail gate before anything is sprayed.

Iron Phosphate Pretreatment

A conversion coating that gives powder and paint a chemically bonded surface and adds a corrosion barrier under the film. Standard on steel parts where salt spray matters.

Precision Masking

Threads, bearing bores, sealing surfaces, grounding pads, connector faces — anything that has to stay uncoated. Plugs, caps, high-temp tape and custom-cut boots, called out on the traveler and checked at inspection.

Racking & Fixturing

How a part hangs decides where the film builds, where it thins and where the rack mark lands. Fixturing is designed for the part, not improvised at the line.

Chemical Stripping

Coating removal for rework, requalification and refurbishment — without attacking the base metal. Useful when a part has been coated once and needs to start over.

Why it matters

Adhesion problems are prep problems

Nearly every coating failure traced back through a warranty claim — peeling, blistering, early corrosion, poor salt spray — started with contamination, an inadequate profile or a missed pretreatment step. Running prep under the same roof as the coating means one shop owns the whole result. There is no finger-pointing between a blaster across town and a coater who inherited the part.

One traveler, one owner

Prep, coat and cure are recorded on the same traveler by the same quality system. If something needs to be traced, it traces.

No transit contamination

Parts do not sit in a truck or on someone else’s dock between blast and booth, picking up moisture and handling oils.

Masking that survives cure

Masking is specified for the cure temperature it will actually see, so plugs do not shrink, slump or bond to the part.

Prep, masking and blasting FAQ

Do I have to tell you what to mask?

Mark it on the print and we will follow it. If the print does not call it out, tell us in the RFQ — threads, bores, sealing surfaces, grounding pads and connector faces are the usual ones. If nothing is specified, we will ask before we coat rather than guess.

What blast media do you use?

Aluminum oxide and glass bead, selected for the substrate and the finish. Aluminum oxide cuts and profiles; glass bead cleans and leaves a softer, more uniform surface. If your spec calls out a specific media or profile range, send it and we will run to it.

Can you strip an existing coating and recoat?

Yes. Chemical stripping removes the old film without attacking the base metal, then the part goes back through the normal prep route and gets recoated. It is a common path for refurbishment and requalification work.

Do you phosphatize before powder coating?

Iron phosphate pretreatment is standard on carbon steel where corrosion performance matters. It is a conversion coating, so it bonds chemically to the steel and gives the powder a surface to key into. Aluminum takes a different pretreatment route.

Where will the rack marks be?

Somewhere — every hung part has them. The useful question is where, and that is a conversation we would rather have before the first article than after. Tell us which surfaces are cosmetic or functional and we will fixture around them.

Is prep quoted separately?

No. Prep is part of the coating price unless a job needs something unusual — heavy scale removal, full strip of an existing system, or custom masking tooling. If that is the case it shows on the quote as a line, not as a surprise.
