Cerakote vs. anodizing vs. powder coating


One converts the surface, one builds a thick film, one builds a very thin one. A practical guide to choosing between them — from a shop that runs all three.

These three get compared constantly, usually by someone trying to protect an aluminium part. They are not competitors so much as different tools — one converts the surface, one builds a thick film, one builds a very thin one. Picking well starts with what the part actually has to survive.

The one-line version

Anodizing

Converts the aluminium surface into a hard oxide layer. Excellent hardness and wear on aluminium specifically. Dimensional growth is small and predictable. Aluminium only.

Powder coating

Builds a thick, tough polymer film over almost any metal. Best impact and corrosion protection per dollar over large areas. Requires an oven cure.

Cerakote®

Builds a very thin ceramic film — roughly one mil — on metals, plastics, polymers and wood. Handles heat to 1800°F and holds tight color consistency.

How to decide

Five questions that settle it

What is the substrate?

Anodizing is an aluminium process — if the part is steel, that decision is already made. Powder covers most metals. Cerakote is the widest, covering metals, plastics, polymers and wood, which matters on mixed assemblies.

How much thickness can you afford?

This is usually the deciding factor. Cerakote at around a mil is the thin-film answer for tight tolerances. Powder is meaningfully thicker. Anodizing grows dimension only slightly and predictably, which is why it survives on close-fit hardware.

How hot does it get?

Cerakote is the outlier — rated to 1800°F in the right product, which puts it in exhaust and engine territory where organic coatings simply fail.

Does color have to repeat exactly?

Cerakote holds a color-consistency standard of Delta E of 1 or less across 200+ finishes, which is tighter than most systems. Anodizing dye lots vary more than people expect, especially across different alloy batches.

What is the cost driver?

Over a large surface area, powder is generally the most economical protective film. On small, high-value, tolerance-critical parts, thin-film processes usually cost less overall once you account for masking and rework.

What does the drawing say?

If the print calls out MIL-A-8625 anodize or a specific MIL-spec paint system, that ends it. Specification beats preference every time.

A few details that catch people out

Fatigue on aluminium

Cerakote does not detrimentally impact the fatigue properties of aluminium alloys, which is a meaningful consideration on structural and cyclically loaded parts.

Compliance

Cerakote contains no heavy metals and is VOC compliant in all 50 states. Worth confirming against your own customer’s restricted-substance requirements.

You can combine them

Anodize then coat, or plate then powder, is common. Because Gleco runs plating, anodizing and coatings inside one company, a multi-process part does not have to move between vendors.

Frequently asked questions

Is Cerakote thicker or thinner than powder coating?

Much thinner — roughly one mil (0.001 inch) against a substantially thicker powder film. That is why Cerakote is chosen where fit and tolerance matter.

Can you Cerakote over anodizing?

Combinations are possible and are decided case by case. Send the part and the requirement and we will confirm what stacks correctly.

Which gives the best corrosion protection?

It depends on the environment and the substrate. Powder generally gives the most protection per dollar over a large area; Cerakote performs strongly in a far thinner film; anodizing on aluminium is excellent for wear but is a converted surface rather than an applied barrier.

What temperature can each handle?

Cerakote is rated to 1800°F in the appropriate product. Powder coatings are organic films with far lower service temperatures unless a high-temperature system is specified. Anodizing is an oxide and is not the limiting factor in most thermal applications.

Does anodizing change part dimensions?

It grows the surface slightly and predictably, which is why it is favoured on close-fit aluminium hardware. Applied coatings add more.

Do you do all three in-house?

Powder and Cerakote at the Rowlett coatings facility; anodizing at Gleco Plating. Both are the same company, so a multi-process part ships on one PO under one quality system.
