The problem

Half your finishing supplier is somebody else

A steel bracket needs zinc plating for corrosion protection and powder coating for appearance. An aluminium housing needs chem film for conductivity and then paint. A fastener needs zinc-nickel and then a dry film lubricant. In each case the part has to visit two companies.

So there are two quotes, two POs, two lead times that do not line up, and freight in the middle. And when the coating lifts six months later, you get two confident explanations that contradict each other, from two companies that each believe the other one caused it.

That is the normal way this is bought. It is not the only way.

Gleco Paint & Powder Coating is the coatings division of Gleco Plating, a third-generation Texas family business running since 1979. Our plant is on Grisham Drive in Rowlett. The plating plant is about a mile up the same street. There is a third plant in McAllen for the Rio Grande Valley.

What changes when the plater is in-house

Pretreatment stops being a guess

The single biggest cause of coating failure is what was on the surface beforehand. When the plating happened at another company, we are coating over a surface we did not create and cannot fully characterise. When it happened at our own plant, we know the bath, the chromate, the rinse and the date.

Process windows get honoured

Some sequences have clocks on them — a blasted surface has a limited window before coating, and high-strength parts need embrittlement relief within a set time after plating. Inside one company those are scheduling rules. Across two, they are nobody’s job.

Masking is solved once

Masking for plating and masking for coating are different problems on the same part, and they interact — threads to keep clear, bores that cannot build, surfaces that need to stay conductive. Solving both on one bench beats solving each blind.

One company is accountable

If the finish fails, there is one company responsible and it performed both operations. No two-sided argument you have to referee.

One certification package

Both operations on one set of documents from one AS9100D-registered, ITAR-registered company. One traveler to reconcile, not two that disagree.

A mile, not a state

Parts move between our buildings in our vehicles, in our packaging. No third-party freight leg in the middle of your process, and no extra pack-and-unpack cycle on a freshly plated surface.

What people actually send us for both

Zinc or zinc-nickel, then powder

Corrosion protection from the plating, appearance and a second barrier from the powder. The most common pairing we run, and the one where pretreatment compatibility matters most.

Zinc phosphate, then paint

The classic paint base on steel. Phosphate runs on the plating side, paint runs here.

Chem film, then paint or powder on aluminium

MIL-DTL-5541 conversion coating as the adhesion and corrosion base, topcoat over it. Class 1A or Class 3 depending on whether the part has to stay electrically conductive.

Anodize, then selective coating or marking

Type II or Type III on the plating side, then silkscreening, part marking or a selective topcoat here.

Passivation, then coating on stainless

Free iron removed first, then coated. Doing it in the wrong order is a common and expensive mistake.

Plating, then dry film lubricant

For fasteners and moving assemblies where both corrosion protection and a controlled friction coefficient are on the print.

If your print calls out a sequence that will not work — and some do — we would rather tell you at quote time than after we have your parts. That conversation is free.

The honest version

When you should not consolidate

A qualified source you cannot move

If a finish is qualified to a specific approved supplier on a defense or aerospace program, requalifying it to save a PO is rarely worth the cost. Consolidate what is not locked down.

A process we do not run

There are processes neither our coatings plant nor either plating plant performs. We will say so rather than stretch to cover it.

Deliberate dual sourcing

Some buyers split finishing on purpose so one plant going down does not stop a line. That is a legitimate strategy and we will not argue you out of it.

Coating and plating from one supplier

Are you the same company as Gleco Plating?

Yes. Gleco Paint & Powder Coating is the coatings division of Gleco Plating, Inc. Separate building, separate website, same company, same quality system, one purchase order. The sites are separate because coatings buyers search for coatings.

Can you get my parts plated as well as coated?

Yes. Send one print covering both. We handle the routing, the transport between our own buildings and the sequencing, and you get one quote, one date and one certification package.

Which comes first, plating or coating?

Almost always plating, then coating — the plated layer is the corrosion base and the coating is the barrier and the appearance over it. But it depends on the specification and on the substrate, and there are exceptions. Send the print and we will confirm the sequence before anything is quoted.

Do I get one certificate of conformance covering both?

Yes, one document from one company covering the full route. Tell us at quote time what your incoming inspection needs to see so it is built into the routing rather than assembled afterwards.

Can you handle ITAR-controlled and defense work through both processes?

Yes. Gleco is ITAR registered and AS9100D certified, and keeping the whole route inside one registered company means fewer transfers to control and document. We run MIL-spec and CARC finishing here.

Does the plating happen in the same building as the coating?

No — plating and coating are genuinely different operations with different environmental controls, and they belong in separate buildings. Ours are about a mile apart on the same street in Rowlett. What matters is that they are the same company, so the part never leaves our control.
